Once the artery was closed, blood flow to the patient’s lower extremities was reportedly cut off. Without oxygen-rich blood, the legs could not maintain warmth or circulation. The prolonged lack of blood flow caused severe tissue damage, ultimately resulting in the amputation of both legs.

When the patient awoke weeks later, he learned that not only had the gastric bypass surgery not been completed, but he had also suffered the permanent loss of his lower limbs.
